4. I wouldn’t label you as asexual or trans based on this alone. I do think there are a lot of messages about vulvas that tend to creep into our brains outside of any recognizable sexual trauma. People with vulvas typically are more often and more strongly discouraged from touching their genitals when they are young. There is the idea that mucus membrane are more like the insides of our bodies. Kids are often discouraged from touching their eyes or the inside of their mouths for sanitary reasons. Then there is all the messages we might get about our specific vulvas being maybe diseased or anatomically wrong. I have a pain condition called vestibulodynia- pain in the tissue around the vaginal opening. My gynecologist proscribed me a topical cream to apply to the red areas of skin. The first time I tried, I squatted over a mirror and touched the tender skin, and I felt queasy and faint. I had to apply it a bit at a time, taking deep breaths. Each time, it got easier. Now, I can even stick a finger into my vagina to feel for my IUD strings and I’m considering trying a menstrual cup. It was exposure therapy. It will get easier with exposure if that is something you want and feel ready for.
