I’ve taken STD tests regularly for years and never looked at the results. The clinic calls, says results are negative, and I move on. Also, HSV isn’t included in standard screenings. That being said, antivirals require a doctor’s prescription. A doctor would not prescribe them without a confirmed results (too many false positives). A doctor wouldn’t test for HPV and prescribe something for HSV, regardless of what your boyfriend thought he was taking. The only thing that might warrant the benefit of the doubt is that the doctor never said “herpes,” your boyfriend didn’t know herpes was coded as HSV, and so your boyfriend thought he was hearing “HPV.” Although I find this unlikely. Was your boyfriend trying to infect you? Hard to say, but if he thought it was HPV then he could have thought nothing of it if he thought you had it. If he knew it was HSV, he probably thought the anti-virals would be enough protection (ie, reckless, not malicious). All that being said, there’s too many red flags in his story.
